... Sort of. It'd almost be better if it was, but Nyx isn't... malevolent? Not really. So the Kirijo Group--and this is back when Mitsuru-senpai's grandfather was running it--was experimenting on Shadows, and then they found out about the prophecy of the Fall. Most of the research team ended up deciding that, yeah, to die is a mercy, so they started gathering Shadows to form Nyx's herald, Death. Once that was done, the Fall wouldn't be long. The death of everyone and everything on the planet.
One of the researchers stopped it early. Death escaped, incomplete, and so did his twelve other fragments--all different Arcana. Magician through Hanged Man. But... that many Shadows, that much concentrated misery? The night just... warped. Time broke a little. For about ten years there was an hour hidden between midnight and the next minute--the Dark Hour. Shadows came out, the place where the lab used to be would turn into a huge twisted tower called Tartarus every night. There was a lot of other weird stuff about it too, but... anyway.
Since Death was incomplete and sealed away, the Fall was held off, but things were still getting worse as time went on... Long story short, over a long stretch of 2009, my team and I were tricked into letting Death become complete. The Fall nearly happened in early 2010--it started-- but I had a little help from Igor. We formed the Universe Arcana as the last ace up my sleeve.
Then it was just me and the big one. [ sip. ] ... I didn't walk away.
