She wanted to see what the strongest impulse in humanity was. Hope, Despair, or Emptiness. And if Hope wasn't strongest...

[He sighs.]

It didn't sound like there was a happy ending planned. And she didn't intend to play fair.

[ she rubs the back of her head, thinking. ]

If it's Hope, that's... good, I think. Means everything we did
was worthwhile.

...What was it like for you?

[ she goes quiet for a moment, thinking. ]

The way I heard it... long, long ago, the goddess Nyx granted night and death to the world. At some point there was a prophecy, I guess? That when the collective suffering and despair of humanity became too much to bear, the death drive would start to bring Nyx's children, the Shadows, into the world. To make Nyx's return go more smoothly. To bring the Fall.

So--okay, did you ever hear about that huge lab explosion in Iwatodai back in '99? Hundreds of researchers, plenty of damage to nearby parts of the city...?

I remember it. My parents worried they'd be assigned to investigate it, but we went to Hokkaido instead.

That was Nyx?

[foolaround]

... Sort of. It'd almost be better if it was, but Nyx isn't... malevolent? Not really. So the Kirijo Group--and this is back when Mitsuru-senpai's grandfather was running it--was experimenting on Shadows, and then they found out about the prophecy of the Fall. Most of the research team ended up deciding that, yeah, to die is a mercy, so they started gathering Shadows to form Nyx's herald, Death. Once that was done, the Fall wouldn't be long. The death of everyone and everything on the planet.

One of the researchers stopped it early. Death escaped, incomplete, and so did his twelve other fragments--all different Arcana. Magician through Hanged Man. But... that many Shadows, that much concentrated misery? The night just... warped. Time broke a little. For about ten years there was an hour hidden between midnight and the next minute--the Dark Hour. Shadows came out, the place where the lab used to be would turn into a huge twisted tower called Tartarus every night. There was a lot of other weird stuff about it too, but... anyway.

Since Death was incomplete and sealed away, the Fall was held off, but things were still getting worse as time went on... Long story short, over a long stretch of 2009, my team and I were tricked into letting Death become complete. The Fall nearly happened in early 2010--it started-- but I had a little help from Igor. We formed the Universe Arcana as the last ace up my sleeve.

Then it was just me and the big one. [ sip. ] ... I didn't walk away.

I'm sorry to hear it.

[He says it with the exact sober formality you'd expect when informing someone a relative had just passed away, and he sighs, sipping his drink. That's... hard. He'd come to the brink of death himself in his last fight, had maybe even been dead for a moment (he thinks so, but it isn't as though he could check his own pulse)... but that doesn't compare to what she's talking about.]

Thank you. For stopping the Fall.

[ she shrugs. ]

It was all in the contract when everything started. "Time never waits. It delivers all equally to the same end. I agree to the statement above, and I chooseth this fate of mine own free will."

[ minako exhales, before flashing a practiced smile. ]

I got my year and I did the only thing I could. It's that simple, right?

When you put it that way... I can't say I wouldn't have done the same thing. But I'm glad I didn't have to. So I'm still grateful to you.

[ she drums her fingers, bobbing her head in a vague nod after he says that.

something about that bothers her. no gratitude was expected here, not from anyone. she doesn't even think she wants it. as if being thanked goes against the whole point of the thing. ]

You're welcome, I guess...? Sorry, I just... don't really know what to do with that. [ which is unusual for her. her tone is apologetic and kind of surprised at the same time, like being on relatively even footing for once is nice. even as awkward as the topic is. ]

It's a little hard to know how to talk about it. Regular etiquette doesn't cover it. Once you save the world, there should be guidelines... maybe we should all start using 'Wagahai' to refer to ourselves, or something.
